Edmon Marukyan

Per aspera ad astra

For the sake of achieving national goals and strengthening and prospering the homeland, I swear to faithfully fulfill my obligations to the people, to observe the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Armenia, to promote the sovereignty and interests of the Republic of Armenia, to do everything for civic solidarity, to preserve national and universal values.

I am here to protect human rights and rule of law

Human rights

Human rights

Before politics I hold two Master’s Degrees, one in Jurisprudence from the Public Administration Academy of Armenia and the second one in Law (LL.M.) with concentration in International Human Rights Law from the University of Minnesota Law School. So I was a human rights advocate and since 2001 I have been specializing in the protection of human rights and was considerably involved in the strengthening of democracy and civil society in Armenia. As a human rights lawyer I protected the rights of our citizens at local courts and also conducted strategic litigations taking cases up to the European Court of Human Rights.

The only independent MP

The only independent MP

In 2012, there was a momentum; it was the preparation of Parliamentary Elections in Armenia, and I felt that it was the right time to step in since we have seen the same corrupt faces with old soviet mentality and outdated views. This was why, it was the time to act instead of observing from aside and blame for the failures later on. It was obvious that there will be no changes since no alternative was given to the voters. I began my independent and non-partisan campaign. On May 7, I shocked Armenia with my team defeating 17-year Parliament member from ruling party. We thrilled the surprised country by promising to continue to be a human rights activist and represent the interests of people to ensure that freedoms are respected. I became the only independent Member of Parliament out of 131.

Bright Armenia

Bright Armenia

At some point I realized that people gathered around me in politics for whom worth of the human person is as high as for me. Without even noticing it, we were moving in one direction – towards Bright Armenia. Bright Armenia became a home for the people who are conscious about their liberties and its value, people, who build individuals from within, for whom the highest virtue is becoming a dedicated citizen of the homeland inherited from their ancestors, who are the guarantees and important requisites of a strong state, stable society and operating law. And we started to stream towards coexistence, towards stable and dynamic society that guarantees the freedom and independence of the country.

Way Out

Way Out

I understood that it was impossible to fight the corrupt regime alone. We needed reliable and strong allies who are ready to fight day after day despite all the difficulties. The task was to gather the most progressive and resistant opposition forces. It was at this moment that we, together with the Civil Contract and the Republic parties, united in a political alliance Way Out. Our main task was the struggle with the regime. I am proud that I was one of the founders of the Way Out alliance, and that I was chosen by my colleagues as the №1 in the proportional election list. So I can confidently call all the path passed with Way Out successful. After all, the result of this activity was the peaceful velvet revolution in Armenia in 2018, which led to a change of the corrupt regime. The task was completed, so it was time to go further …

The Way Out Alliance seemed to fulfill its main mission – the revolution has qualitatively changed political priorities in the country, for the first time giving each force equal competitive opportunities. Ahead of us were waiting for the special parliamentary elections. We were very grateful to our partners from the Way Out. But the time was to disperse, and we decided to participate in the elections with our own program and our own concept. These elections were hard times: post-revolutionary excitement reigned in the country, 11 forces participated in the elections, most of the election campaigns were full of populism, hate speech and fakes. In such conditions, we achieved an unprecedented result, gaining 6.37% and receiving 18 MP mandates. In fact, we have become the only real opposition in new Armenia, and therefore a counterweight to the new government. In other words, the guarantor of the fact that Armenia will really become bright.
